President’s Remarks

Pensioners in the Park

May I thank everyone for their efforts with this event; it was a case of “rain stopped play”. It was, however, the rain that fed the seed of what I hope will grow into something very worthwhile.

I spent the morning of Friday the 13th with the “Park People” who wanted a re-run of the Pensioners in the Park in August. I have suggested they open it up to…. “The community wants to see what you do- show it off here”. This offers any individual or group free space to exhibit their product, talent or service. It will be a regular Park feature and because of its very nature it is easily sustained – as they say watch this space.

The involvement of Rotary would be minimal and without cost but it will show the Roundel next to the strap line “Making the Community visible”.

Kids Out

May I thank Ian Madeley for the organisation of what is always an enjoyable event. Photos follow.

Finally My Thanks

These go to every one of you. Thank you for an enjoyable, memorable year – Secretary, Council, Convenors, and Committee member’s thank you for all your support. Oh and yes as an after thought to my young bride !!!!!!!

I hope we didn’t steer too far off our heading and please remember, no bullying when I re-join the troop. I am delighted to be passing the baton to the very capable hands of John Kay and look forward to what I know will be another fulfilling year in Rotary.

Chernobyl

The Chernobyl accident occurred in the Ukraine over 22 years ago but many people are unaware that the consequences will linger on for a very long time.

Last year our Past President Brian Cunliffe OBE (PHF) happened to hear Olwyn Keogh MBE speak at the Rotary Club of Padiham about the work her Charity “Friends of Chernobyl’s Children (FOCC)” is doing for children from Belarussia. We had not appreciated that because of the wind direction 70% of the fall-out fell on Belarus and that the agricultural land there will be tainted for thousands of years. This means that children from the poorest areas, in particular, suffer a range of diseases due to eating food grown in contaminated ground. Drugs and vitamins are virtually non existent in Belarus and many people die through lack of proper treatment.

Every year the FOCC based near Preston bring children to one of their groups spread through the UK. They provide family placements for the children of the Mogilev and Gomel region of Belarus for at least one month and meet the full cost of these visits including health checks and dental care etc. This serves to boost the immune systems of the Children and increases their life expectancy considerably. The children also get a brief holiday and some new clothing!

When members of the Rotary Club of Rochdale learned from Olwyn that the provision of simple multi-vitamins could make such a difference they resolved that they would donate a years supply for 52 children. In fact when the local Costco store heard about the Charity from us they willingly offered to supply all the Vitamins (19,000) free of charge. This enabled us to make a cash donation for an equivalent amount (£250). Thank you Costco.

Olwyn has been helped by Rotary clubs before. In fact the Rotary Club of Sheffield made her a Paul Harris Fellow for the splendid work she and her volunteers do each year.
