Police versus Muslim community - at football
Date published: 31/05/2008
Following last year’s success, Deen 4 All, a Rochdale-based multi faith group and Rochdale Police, will hold another 'friendly' football match. The game will take place on Sunday 8 June 2008 at Springhill Sports Centre, Turf Hill Road, Rochdale. The kick off is at 11.00am.
Youths from various Mosques will represent the Muslim community of Rochdale.
Mr Salem Ahmed, the Marketing Director for Deen For All, explained: “Last year following the football match, it was agreed we should continue this project every year. The match gives a unique opportunity for young men from the Muslim community to send a positive message to the wider community and continue the dialogue between our communities and the police.
"We have invited key members from the community to participate in this project. Kashmir Youth Project (KYP) have kindly donated the trophy. We are also fortunate to have the Mayor of Rochdale, along with the cabinet Portfolio holder for Community Cohesion, Councillor Mohammed Sharif, supporting this initiative.
The Muslim community feels strengthening relationships between sections of our local community is generally 'the goal' of both groups."
Chief Superintendent Peter Mason, head of Policing for the Rochdale Borough said: "Building on from last year’s very successful football match and meal, I am fully supportive of a further match and its development into an annual event. I am sure that the Rochdale Police team will be looking to retain the trophy and make lasting friendships with our opponents. The concept of a representative team from the Mosques within Rochdale is a great idea and one that resulted in a very close game last year and the removal of communication barriers. A series of very productive meetings have taken place as a result of the match and long may they continue. I am looking forward to the game but, on a personal note, not the stiff limbs afterwards, if selected!"
Mr Ahmed concluded: “We have received support from Rochdale Football Club’s Community football officer, Azmat Khan and Councillor Ibrar Khan - both of whom will play a role in the event. The support has been terrific and, weather permitting, we are looking forward to it."
Deen For All is looking for individual or corporate sponsors for the event - please contact Saleem Ahmed on 07970 402582.
