Date published: 03/03/2006

Rochdale MP Paul Rowen is looking forward to working with a new boss, new Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Menzies Campbell MP.  Paul said, "Although I supported Simon Hughes campaign, Sir Menzies Campbell will make a strong leader and I offer him my congratulations.  He is a man of great stature, integrity and has a wealth of experience especially in Foreign Affairs.  I now look forward to moving on and fighting the crucial Local Elections.  We had three excellent candidates and I hope that Simon Hughes and Chris Huhne will continue to play a key part in our party."

Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Rochdale, Councillor Alan Taylor said, "Sir Menzies Campbell will be an asset to our party and I hope that he can come to Rochdale to support our campaign to take control of Rochdale Council."

Sir Cyril Smith MBE said, "I am disappointed, but Sir Menzies is a very capable man.  I shared an office with him for three years and he is impeccably organised.  I hope that he can lead us to more electoral success in places like Rochdale and across Greater Manchester."

North West Euro MP Chris Davies said, "I am delighted with the result; Menzies Campbell is one of the most responsible politicians in Britain.  He combines common sense with passionate support for Liberal values and human rights.  He will provide a rock solid foundation for an ambitious team of MP's determined to take the party forward."
