Dale favourite laid to rest

Date published: 22/07/2008

Former fan's favourite Ernie Cooksey was buried at Grove Park Cemetery in London yesterday (Monday 21 July), after he lost his battle with cancer earlier this month aged 28.

A host of former colleagues and managers attended a packed service at St. James Church, Bermonsey, London, alongside friends and fans paying their last respects.

Ernie's coffin was draped in the shirt of one of his former clubs, Oldham Athletic, and was decorated with a single red rose. The coffin was carried into the church by 12 of Ernie's close friends and an emotional tribute followed as pictures were shown on a big screen to the tune of 'You raise me up'.

Everyone at the service showed their appreciation for Ernie's life through a thunderous applause that echoed around the church.

Dale and Oldham fans will get the chance to do the same when the two sides meet in the first round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday 12 August. Ahead of the game fans will be able to show their appreciation through a minute's applause on what is sure to be an emotional night at Spotland.
