Bus Shelter Boost for Rochdale Bus Passengers
Date published: 08/12/2004
The first of 400 new-look bus shelters set to be introduced across Greater Manchester have made their debut on Rochdale streets.
The new shelters are part of a £1.8 million investment by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority to dramatically increase the number of bus stops with shelters. The few remaining ‘old-style’ bus shelters still in use will also be phased out and replaced by new ones.
Two new shelter suppliers have been contracted in the bid to improve the waiting environment for bus passengers – Queensbury Shelters Ltd and Trueform Engineering Ltd.
Councillor Allen Brett, Authority Deputy Chair and spokesperson for Rochdale borough, took a closer look at one of the new Queensbury style shelters in Milnrow. He said: “It is right that improving passenger perception of bus travel should start at the beginning of the journey. By enhancing that initial experience of waiting for a bus we are making using public transport an altogether better experience from the off.
“The new shelters are stylish, yet practical, providing information and protection from the elements. We will endeavour to install them at bus stops wherever feasible. Having consulted with bus users before deciding on the style of these new shelters, I am confident that they will meet the requirements of waiting passengers.”
It is intended that at least 400 shelters will be introduced throughout the county over the next three years, with further installation programmes being developed up to 2009.
Queensbury shelters are being installed at general locations in Greater Manchester, whilst Trueform shelters will primarily be introduced across the county-wide network of Quality Bus Corridors. Both shelter designs are intended to complement the existing GMPTE contract for bus shelters with JC Decaux.
Anyone wishing to make a request for a bus shelter can contact GMPTE’s Stops and Shelters department on 0161 242 6960.
