Hurstead Resident Rubbishes Waste Collection Changes

Date published: 21/06/2006

Mr Joe Summers of Holland Street has complained of having "a bin full of maggots" because of alterations to Rochdale refuse collections. The Hurstead resident told Rochdale Online, "This is due to the waste food stuffs being stored within a closed container in warm weather for the past 2 weeks."

Mr Summers found the response of a staff member at the Green Lane environmental depot in Heywood unacceptable after he was apparently told that this was "a problem that he would just have to live with." The state of Mr. Summers' bin has had an impact on his daily life as the maggots have prevented his family from spending time in a garden that they normally use throughout the summer.

Mr Summers continued, "I am all for the recycling scheme and have been using the recycling depots at Chichester Street and Morrisons car park for the last 2 years and still had a full bin every week, the RMBC literature says that after an audit another bin could be provided but this won’t solve the problem of rotting rubbish left for 2 weeks."

Mr Summers took further action by contacting Rochdale MBC waste disposal but they refused to come and empty his bin. Meanwhile he is continuing to try and remedy the problem by contacting as many people as possible within the Rochdale Borough waste management team. "I hope to try and get the problems that I'm sure everyone is having sorted out", he said.
