Infirmary nurses contribute to pioneering text book

Date published: 28/06/2006

Debra Vickers lead nurse for thrombolysis and Paula Bithell nurse consultant (cardiology), who are both based at Rochdale Infirmary, are amongst four specialist cardiology nurses who work for the Pennine Acute Trust who have made a significant contribution to helping write a pioneering text book that aims to improve care for patients who have suffered heart attacks and other cardiac problems.

Called: "Cardiac Care: An Introductory Text’, the text book includes contributions from specialist nurses and nurse academics from across Greater Manchester.

The book, which is targeted at non-specialist nurses and other health professionals, was launched at a special event on in June.

The book’s editor, Ian Jones, who is also a lecturer in cardiac nursing at Salford University, said that he believed that the book could help improve the treatment of patients with cardiac problems across the country.

Ian said: "Traditionally, cardiac care reference books are written with experienced cardiac care nurses in mind. This book, on the other hand, is designed to be accessible to non-specialist nurses and other healthcare staff, such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

"The book is written, based on the knowledge and experience of a wide range of contributors. It covers prevention, acute care, as well as issues such as rehabilitation and palliative care.

"We wanted to make it as broad-based as possible, and we expect a lot of interest from across the country. We’re sure that it can make a real difference in helping with the treatment and care of cardiac patients."

Debra said: "We were all delighted to be able to make a contribution to this book, and hope that it will bring some benefit to both patients and our colleagues."
