Woman injured in police involvement road traffic collision

Date published: 30/05/2006

At approximately 4.05am on Sunday 28 May 2006, an officer was on duty on Manchester Old Road in Middleton in a liveried Vauxhall Corsa.

The officer attempted to stop a Volvo S70 car, that had been reported stolen, but it failed to stop. The officer then started to follow the vehicle.

A short time later, the Volvo was in collision with a wall of St John's Church, Heywood.

A 19-year-old woman travelling in the car suffered a broken arm and was taken to Fairfield Hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Three men and two women were arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner's consent.

The officer driving the police Corsa was initially relieved of their driving authority but was later reinstated.

The matter has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commision (IPCC).
