Rochdale Climate Change Conference

Date published: 14/09/2006

Rochdale will be hosting a Climate Change Conference on Saturday 30 September at Richmond Hall from 10am until 3pm.  The event featuring workshops and key note speakers, including Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, Chris Davies MEP, Spokesperson in the European Parliament on Environment and the only British member of the European Parliament's Climate Change Team and Paul Rowen MP.  There will also guest speakers from Friends of the Earth and other Environmental Groups.

Organiser, Paul Rowen, said, "All MP’s were approached by Friends of the Earth about organising this and I am delighted that Rochdale was one of the first places in the country to take up this offer.  The event will be an interactive one with workshops looking at some of the most complex issues
facing our planet.  It is vital that some of the issues linked to climate change are discussed locally.  This is not a talking shop; I hope that as a result of the conference we will be able to pinpoint five recommendations to the people of Rochdale and five recommendations to the Council of how Rochdale can do its bit to combat climate change."

Chris Davies, who recently visited Greenland to see first hand the effects of global warming,  including melting polar ice caps said: "I am looking forward to attending this event and thank Paul Rowen for organising it.  I hope that this event leads to similar ones across the North-West. I am the only British Member on the European Parliament’s Climate Change Team and will be using this conference as an example in Europe of how local communities can come together to take action on such a vital issue like as climate change."

This is part of Friends of the Earth’s "Big Ask’ Event, aimed at getting local communities to take environmental issues seriously and is free to the people of Rochdale.  For a booking form please contact Paul Rowen’s Office on 01706 712186.  People interested in facilitating any of the workshops or speak at the conference, are asked to call the same number.
