Urgent roadworks - Rochdale town centre

Urgent repair works on the A58 St Mary's gate in Rochdale town centre are likely to cause delays until the weekend.

Both carriageways of the road have been reduced to a single lane from dual carriageway, close to the junction with Spotland Road and Hunters Lane.

The works are required due to the failure of an electrical cable, and are being carried out by contractors on behalf of United Utilities. However, the cable has been found to be very close to a gas main. Transco are assisting with the work to ensure the gas main is unaffected.

As a result it is not possible to use mechanical diggers. The repair work is likely to take several days but should be complete by the weekend.

The work is essential to ensure the continuity of power supply within the town centre.
