Christmas Crime Prevention Roadshow
Date published: 22/11/2006
A Christmas Crime Prevention Roadshow is being staged in Rochdale to reduce incidents of domestic burglary and robbery as well as the fear of crime.
The roadshow will provide crime prevention advice and products to all members of the community, and is funded by the Greater Manchester High Sheriff's Police Trust, the Local Authority Safer Communities Partnership, Rochdale Borough Wide Housing and Syke Base Community Group.
Crime figures show a traditional spike in incidents of domestic burglary during the autumn period and the build up to Christmas, and statistics show that one in five burglaries are as a result of insecurities in the home. Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) will therefore advise residents on domestic security products such as light timers, window shock alarms and shed alarms, and remind them not to leave valuable items like Christmas presents on view in the home.
PCSOs will also hand out property marking packs containing uv pens and personal attack alarms to young people who are at risk of becoming victims of robbery, especially after Christmas when items such as mobile phones, iPods, MP3 players, Play Stations and laptop computers are received as presents.
Crime Reduction Adviser for Rochdale Jackie Dickinson said: "The roadshow will reassure people by encouraging a sense of personal safety and security and enhancing domestic security across Rochdale. I therefore hope people living here will make the effort to visit one of our events, as advice they pick up could help prevent them being burgled or robbed in future."
