Anti-road toll poster campaign launched across Greater Manchester

Date published: 24/07/2007

Hard-hitting poster vans warning motorists about the impending Toll Tax have been out and about on the roads of Greater Manchester. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) will vote on Friday 27 July whether or not to put in a bid to the Transport Innovation Fund which could see Rochdale gain vital public transport improvements at the cost of enforcing a controversial congestion charge in Greater Manchester.

Vans telling drivers to "Stand and Deliver’, have been circling the M60, which marks the outer charging zone of the proposed congestion charge AGMA want to introduce.

The vans stopped around the perimeter of the ring road to let people know exactly what they were facing in areas including Rochdale, aswell as Stockport, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Tameside and Trafford.

If AGMA vote in favour of the scheme on Friday 27 July motorists face a £5 a day charge for driving to and from work.

Sean Corker, spokesman for Manchester Against Road Tolls, the group behind the poster campaign, said: "These vans are an effective way of showing motorists how wide-ranging the congestion charge zone is.

"Tens of thousands of commuters are likely to be affected by a scheme which is simply there to raise cash from motorists."
