Teachers vote on one day pay strike

Date published: 01/03/2008

Teachers are being balloted on a national strike which could close Rochdale’s school’s on Thursday 24 April.

Forms are being sent to National Union of Teachers members along with letters urging them support the action

The ballot closes on March 31 and a yes vote would trigger the first national teachers’ walk-out for 20 years.

It follows the Government’s announcement of a 2.45 per cent pay increase for teachers this year, with further rises of 2.3 per cent in 2009 and 2010.

The increases are below the Retail Prices Index inflation rate of 4.1 per cent but above the Government’s preferred measure of inflation, the Consumer Prices Index, which excludes housing costs and is running at 2.2 per cent.
