GMP campaign halves drink driving

Greater Manchester Police latest ‘don’t drink and drive’ campaign has reduced drink driving by almost 50 per cent when compared to figures from the previous year.

In June 2008 155, of the 4,799 drivers breathalysed proved positive for excess alcohol, failed or refused to take the test. This is a 49 per cent reduction in positive, failed or refused tests for the 4,656 tests carried out in June 2007.

Chief Inspector Haydn Roberts of GMP’s Operational Support Unit said: “We and our partners welcome the fact that drivers are listening to warnings on drink driving, with the latest figures showing a halving of the number of drivers being arrested for this crime.

“A reduction of one quarter of road collisions in June 2008 when compared to the same period last year shows that our roads are becoming safer.

“These results show that drivers are responding positively to the drink driving safety messages and are a clear indication of GMP's continued commitment to tackling drink-driving.”
