Hospice Throws Tea At 3 Party

Date published: 21/06/2005

Tea at 3, took place in Rochdale on Friday 17 June as people throughout the borough joined forces to support their local Hospice. In total around 30 different organizations took part in the fundraising in any way that they could, from holding their own tea parties to selling Hospice merchandise.

At Springhill Hospice itself, staff and volunteers held a tea party for over 100 people who were served delicious tea, which was donated from Yorkshire Tea and magnificent cakes made by Springhill Hospice kitchen.  Visitors also enjoyed live entertainment from ‘Band in the Bedroom’, a large Bring and Buy sale, Tombola, raffle and Guess the Weight of the Cake competition also added to the amount of money raised on the day, which totaled £450.

Further groups that offered their support ranged from local businesses to sheltered accommodations. The residents at Pegasus Court held a tea party, which raised approximately £280 by selling cakes and teas and holding a Tombola. The warden, Angela Bywater was overjoyed at the efforts of the tenants. She said, “I’m so pleased with the way that everyone has really come together to give their time and money to such a worthwhile cause. Our volunteers worked so hard and there were around 40 of us altogether so we had a fantastic afternoon.”

Amongst the other sheltered accommodations that took part on the day were Aysgarth, Shepherd Court, Guinness House, Isherwood Close, Lyndon House, Springfield Sheltered, Moss Row, Penine View, Harehill Court and Yew Court.  Companies that got involved include our very own ‘Community Pub of the Year,’ The Spring Inn, The Abbey and ASDA. The final amount that has been raised by these parties throughout the borough will be confirmed later this week.

Leyla Nejad, Community Fundraiser at Springhill Hospice said, “We are delighted with the amount of support that has been offered to us from the people of Rochdale. We really want to thank everyone that got involved, in particularly the wardens of sheltered accommodation who have really gone out of their way to support us. Their efforts have been remarkable and we are extremely grateful.”

The Tea at 3 initiative aimed to raise awareness and funds for Springhill Hospice’s 15th Anniversary Refurbishment Appeal. They aim to raise £1m (over and above the £1.8m needed to keep the Hospice functioning) in order to fund a variety of projects such as the building of a new overnight facility to house patients relatives. In addition the Appeal will also raise funds to provide the Hospice with new fixtures and fittings in replace of current items, which are showing signs of age.
