Gracie Fields Theatre Gets that Sinking Feeling
Date published: 23/05/2005
The world’s most famous romantic tragedy is coming to Rochdale, as the Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society will be sinking the Titanic every night from Wednesday 1 June until the last show on Saturday 4 June.
Titanic has been re-created at the Gracie Fields Theatre and yes, the ship does sink on stage!
"The scenery for this show will be one of the most impressive sets we have ever used and includes a hydraulic platform to help us recreate the sinking" said Kath Meredith, Secretary of the Society.
"The cast of 50 includes a number of well known local actors including Des Cunliffe, Philip Weetman, Anne Birchenough, and two newcomers in David Gill and John Crebbin who are both highly regarded ".
Titanic will be the second consecutive Northwest Noda Premiere by the Society following on from the award-winning "Scarlet Pimpernel" production last year
"Although everyone knows what happened to the Titanic, this show is more about the optimism of the passengers as they look forward to new lives in America than the actual sinking. The audience will run the gamut of emotions during the show; hope disappointment, joy, excitement, shock etc. I would have no hesitation in bringing the whole family; it's a great drama as well as a thoroughly enjoyable musical"
Titanic the Musical will run from 1 June until 4 June, tickets available from The Society or Touchstones.
