Oakenrod footbridge refurbished
Date published: 20/08/2008
The recent work to refurbish the footbridge over the River Roch at Oakenrod to connect Bridgefield Street to Bury Road was recently completed on time, and the bridge is now open to the public.
To renovate the bridge, the substandard metal handrails were replaced with new masonry parapets, in keeping with other masonry arch bridges of this type. The new parapets are also tall enough to enable the bridge to be used by cyclists in the near future.
To complete the refurbishment, the original granite set paving was taken up to be cleaned, and then replaced, and a new bollard to stop unauthorised vehicles has been fitted.
Rochdale Online asked local businesses what they thought of the new bridge.
Judith Hughes from Brookside Garage said: “It’s great that it’s been finished on time and it looks great.”
Steve Taylor said: “It’s a big improvement to the area and it is money well spent!”
