Helping Heywood’s Health and Safety
Date published: 27/09/2005
Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are running a free event for all businesses in Heywood to introduce the basics of health and safety and discuss what it can mean for a business. The event will last from 8am until 10am on Thursday 6th October and will be at the Heywood Civic Centre on Wood Street.
The breakfast briefing will also cover the benefits of looking after the workforce and how accidents can cost a business, not only in financial terms but also in other ways such as the potential loss of experienced staff. Key pieces of legislation and the basics of risk assessment will also be examined.
Good health and safety management is not just a legal requirement but can bring financial and other business benefits like improved moral, reduced staff absenteeism, increased productivity as well as a decreased risk of compensation claims.
Groundwork’s Vicki Handforth and Emma Inott along with the HSE’s Jason Britton will present the information to the businesses.
Vicki Handforth, an Environmental Business Advisor at Groundwork said, “Every working day at least one person is killed and over six thousand are injured at work. Employers have a duty to look after their employees whilst they are at work and need to make sure they leave in the same state in which they arrived. These form the basics behind the abundance of legislation which is applicable. Although it may seem confusing and a burden health & safety can also be a benefit to your business if correctly managed.”
The event also offers a chance for Heywood companies to get together and speak informally with an enforcement body and experts in health & safety as well as swap best practice with fellow businesses.
