Businesses warned of asbestos scam
Date published: 13/04/2005
A company claiming that businesses must have an asbestos survey undertaken or risk being fined has approached a number of businesses across the borough. The company is offering to undertake the 'survey' for a fee and scare tactics are being used.
There is no specific requirement for businesses to undertake an asbestos survey. The law requires businesses and building owners to MANAGE asbestos-containing materials in their premises to prevent exposure to asbestos. In doing this, businesses MAY wish to commission a survey but this is not a requirement and there is no requirement to remove asbestos.
Gary Parkinson, Senior Environmental Health Officer from Rochdale Council Environmental Health Services urges businesses that are approached to ignore the scare tactics that are being used and not to respond or part with any money. Surveys must only be undertaken by competent people with appropriate UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accreditation/ certification.
The Health and Safety Executive and Trading Standards have been informed and they are currently investigating the matter .
A free publication 'Managing Asbestos in Premises' which explains what is required of building owners is available. If you require a copy of this leaflet or any further information, please contact Environmental Health Services on 01706 864112. For information on accredited organisations, you can ring UKAS on 020 8917 8400.
